Chelsea thwarted in Mike Maignan pursuit as AC Milan goalkeeper not interested in joining Blues due to lack of Champions League football

Chelsea is on the hunt for a new goalie, but it appears that they won’t be able to secure among their most sought-after options AC Milan’s Mike Maygnan.

  • Chelsea is interested in a new goalie
  • Maignan identified as a prioritization
  • The player is not interested in the game.

WHAT HAPPENED?

According to a report from Foot Mercato (via Get French Football News) Chelsea’s hope of attracting French International Maignan over to Stamford Bridge may be over. It appears that the AC Milan goalkeeper is not likely to be drawn by the possibility of joining Chelsea because of Chelsea’s absence from European tournaments in the coming season.

The bigger picture: The Blues had a terrible 2022-23 season, ending in 12th place on the table. In the meantime, Maignan assisted Milan win the Serie A title in 2021-22 and was instrumental in taking to lead the Rossoneri towards their Champions League semi-finals this past season.

However, even if the player’s needs aren’t considered, Milan is simply not willing to sell one of their top athletes in Maignan. The Italian club rejected Chelsea’s initial bid for Maignan, as they believe he is an “untransferable asset” as per the Foot Mercato.

PLUS: New head honcho Todd Boehly has invested heavily in the development of new talent across various segments of the squad during the past two transfer windows, excluding the goalkeeper post.

Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga haven’t proven to be effective players over the past two seasons, particularly the former who played a major part in the team’s success in helping Chelsea to win the Champions League in 2021 but has struggled since with fitness and form.

If the London team fails to sign Maignan They could then turn their attention to Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, who has been linked to.

WHAT NEXT FOR MAIGNAN? In the wake of Hugo Lloris’ retirement from international football, Maignan has taken over as the primary goalkeeper in France. The 27-year-old will be in action with the team Les Bleus against Gibraltar as well as Greece during this month’s UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers later this month.
